Hair Dye: Attempt No.1

I was in Wilkinsons today (a cheapy shop which most normal people do try and avoid)
and i spotted their array of cheaper hairdyes and just thought "oh eck, im just going to grab one and go for it"
I normally like to find the packets with gorgeous girls with amazing glossy long locks..but today i was strictly looking at colour.
I knew that if i bought the lightest i could get away with without going totally ginger, it wouldn't go the colour on the front of the box but i wanted something that would at least lift the colour of my hair. It was left on for 20 minutes, and i sat back and watched, with my fingers crossed that it wouldn't go wrong.

The result?

Well, it's hardly a massive difference is it?
£3 well spent? I'd say so.
It's definitely lighter than before...with some tinges of ginge? (although it's actually not that bad, but im so paranoid, im walking around my house complaing of having a ginger tinge & i think i'm driving my mum mad)
It was an experiment at least...i know that really..a box dye is not going to achieve the colour i want unless i keep re dying it. Im thinking a trip to sallys and a bit of peroxide is actually a better bet, and if that fails..im going to have to fork out for someone to do it properly.. *grimace*

It's a start anyway! You don't get anywhere if you dont experiment ;)

Injecting a bit of "Caramel"

For quite a while now i have been somewhat unsatisfied with my hair colour.
Around 10 months ago i had my hair coloured (only semi permanently) and a few highlights put through the front of my hair...i used to be ALOT more experimental with my hair; dying it darker & highlighting it myself when i was bored of the same old...even cutting it shorter.
I am really happy with the length..could possibly do with some more choppy layers and the ends trimmed but i can do that myself.
The colour?
I have always played it safe and gone darker than my natural shade...in all honesty..my natural hair colour is just bleurgh...it's not a deep dark shade, nor a light golden brown..just kindof ashy & boring.
Ultimately i'd LOVE to have my hair a colour like the images above which have been saved on my computer under the file "Hair" for months & i keep looking at them & trying to muscle up the courage to actually do it.
I was actually flicking through the Jan 2010 Cosmo & the model's hair on page 119 is EXACTLY how i want my hair to be. (if you have that mag to hand)
I know that really you should go darker for the winter & lighter in the summer, but honestly, my complexion is pale enough as it is..if i went any darker i think i'd look ill...i love having highlights because they actually bring warmth to my face...I'd love to look a little more "healthy" through the cold months.
To be honest though, the images above aren't THAT far from my natural colour, i guess it would just be a tinge of blonde-ness.
So yeh...thinking of actually just going on a whim and buying a hair dye tomorrow as an impulse.

Any advice on going lighter by a few shades?
Or even any box's of dye that you think could achieve something similar would be greatly appreciated..i dont fancy going down the bleach route..i can happily bleach my brothers hair..but i dont know if i could do my own haha.

Hair of the Day - Cheryl Cole Inspired

Who's hair do i envy?
Cheryl Cole's, whether it's all her own or not..i think it looks amazing.
I know i will never have hair that will be as high a standard as hers..but i'll give it a damn good shot...plus..mine is all real baby. ;)

To achieve this voluminous style, i simply backcombed and hairsprayed the roots on the crown and sides of my head then gently combed over the craziness (to take it down a notch)
and using straightners (a flat iron) i turned in any layers towards my face to give it a much softer look.
I really despise mega straight, flat long hair, there has to be some oomph in it, or i will approach you in the street and ruffle it up...consider yourself pre-warned.

Hair & FOTD

I used my remington spin dryer today (it was half price in Superdrug & i'd been eyeing it for a while, so i bought it)...a scary looking contraption which blowdry's and curls the hair at the same time. I love this thing, it's my new favourite, i just wish i had it in the summer so the "beach" waves would have been more fitting.

I first blowdryed my roots with my head upside down (this is such a vital step, otherwise you end up with masses of frizz on the top of your head..it's not a good look)
I then used Aussie curl definition serum through my damp ends and taking small sections of my hair i blowdryed. There are videos on youtube demonstrating the process, its not that difficult anyway tbh.
Afterwards, i used "Bed Head After Party" through the curls & also using a straightner i defined the wave where my fringe was being stubborn.
Personally, i love it. It's the Mary Kate & Ashley wave i've always had to achieve by letting my hair air dry...which takes FOREVER. So now i can cut down the time using this handy contraption. You can also determine how tight and how loose the curls are by how long you heat the selected pieces of hair. Although it does drop out slowly anyway, unless you use lots of hairspray.

On my face i am wearing...

Crown and Glory

Crown & Glory is a gorgeous website full of crafty, handmade hair accessories. If, like me, you feel a bit naked without something pretty in your hair, I would seriously urge you to take a look at all the amazing pieces that the lovely Sophie has designed and created.

She very kindly sent me a headband covered in flowers, leaves and a sprinkling of glitter. Basically everything i love to pop in my hair. It's called "The Josephene headband". All flowers are handpainted & made of silk & it's only £10! A bargain if you ask me, especially when so much effort has been put into it.
A lot of you always ask me about my daisy headband, and the truth is i made that, so i can't tell you where to get one. But if you want to add a floral, feminine touch to your barnet, take a look at all the things Sophie has to offer. It's not just flowers either.

Sorry for the crappy webcam quality. I was ill, and so these are about as detailed as you are allowed.

If you want to buy anything from Crown and Glory, you can get a discount of 15% off until November 30th by entering "ZOELLA" at checkout.

FOTD - Cherries in the Snow

Today, i decided to brighten up the poopy wet day with some "Cherries in the Snow"
No. I was not eating cherries...in the snow..
I had it on my lips, and i can safetly say, that through the duration of the day, i only had to reappply this once, and it wasn't because it was all gone. Only because it had faded slightly.
I ate, drank..talked...licked my lips, and no transfering.
I had heard about this delight from HellCandy at first, as she was on a mission to find it, and then the ever so gorgeous Laura started wearing it, and it looked gorgeous.
Revlon are onto something with these lipsticks.
I can't say it would be the same for something less pigmented but i'm sure as hell going back to look at more.
Dare i say it, this lipstick had impressed me far more than any mac lipstick ever has.
Will do a more in depth review for you if you so wish :)

Here's me, myself & I today...
I am a goon.
But, i'm also LOVING my hair atm. Im using a new shampoo and conditioner called "Fat Hair"
& i don't know if you'd agree but this is my hair with no hairspray, no mousse, nada..and it's looking alot more "fat" than normal.

Hope you had a lovely day

Show Orchid

Last night I went out with my girlies. In all honesty, I didn't leave much time to spruce myself up. I had no time to wash my hair so sat and thought what the heck i could do with it in it's current (not so fresh) state. I went for a somewhat Pixie Lott/Cheryl Cole do; Backcombing it and simply putting it up in a pony tail with a center parting. Very quick and very easy!

It was the Cheryl Cole hair inspiration which brought me onto the makeup. Cheryl is known for her bright pink lip, and as i own the Mac Lipstick Show Orchid (which I haven't shown some love for in a while) I decided to opt for that. Obviously having a bright lip means dulling down on the eye makeup, so i kept that fairly neutral.

Face:
♥ Mac Studio Fix Fluid & Mac Strobe Liquid mixed together (essential for a glow in the winter)
♥ Mac Moisture Cover concealer
♥ Benefit Erase Paste in no 1 under eyes/inner corners
♥ Bare Escentuals Foundation in Medium Beige lightly dusted to set
♥ Mac MSF in So Ceylon on cheeks/cheek bones
Eyes
♥ Mac E/S in Nano Gold all over lid
♥ Mac E/S in Espresso in crease
♥ L'oreal Superliner in Carbon Gloss
♥ Maybelline False Lash Effect Mascara
Lips
♥ Mac Show Orchid Lipstick (pro product)

And here are a few poopy webcam shots so you can see my hair a bit better! :)

Someday Summary - Thursday

♥ I've started backcombing my hair again. I went through a stage recently where I haven't felt the urge to grab my little brush and backcomb the life out of my roots (plus, it's pretty bad for the hair so you shouldn't do it too often anyway, and if you do, use more hairspray than backcombing-ness) I think it could have been down to the fact someone stole my backcomb brush (or more likely that I lost it) so i have to use a small barrell brush which isn't as effective but it'll do :) Above are the three stages of me doing my hair. Freshly washed (although backcombing works best when hair is unwashed), backcombed and sprayed, then smoothed down, and finally curled with my straightener for added oomph.
♥ Spent the night in London seeing the boy, he slipped me a little envelope with some post it notes in it that he had written at work. I definitely looked a fool wiping happy tears from my face on the train home. They were adorable. I love little gestures like that, they're my favourite. Big smiles.
♥ I've done so much walking today. I pretty much ran 10 minutes to the shop near the boy's flat to buy food supplies, then ran back again (I was running late and was supposed to be meeting him on his lunch break) then i ran to the tube station...only to find the Jubilee line was shut right where i needed to go..so after 3 line changes I finally managed to get to Bond Street, where i then ran to meet Wilf. We had a rushed 20 minutes then i had to run off to Paddington to get my train home, which again, was a longer way round as the blummin' jubilee line was shut. Ran to my train only to realise once i was sat down...I still had Wilf's flat key. So, once i'd arrived at my home destination, i ran across town to the Post Office (Thinking it would shut soon as i needed to send Wilf the key) and then i realised it shut an hour later. Bought me some dinner in Iceland & my Grandad offered to drive me home from town, so i then walked 15 minutes, up hills...to my Grandads. I've literally only just sat down. I have figured though, that's it's all good for the junk in my trunk (yes, i may be small, but my bum still wobbles haha)
♥ Loving black nailpolish at the moment.
♥ Currently reading Fade To Black & The Gloss Goss

Autumnal Hair & Makeup

As I was in Northampton visiting Louise, we both treated ourselves to a blow dry at a hairdressers, as having long hair can take up far too much time to wash, dry and style, when we could be having quality chummy time instead (plus, there's nothing better than pamper sessions with your best mate).

I would normally just get my hair curled or styled down as I am very boring with my hair, but for a change, I asked for something a bit more "out there". I have eyed a few episodes of The X Factor USA and spotted Demi Lovato's love for plaits/braids and wanted to see if I could pull it off with my little pea head. I actually think this style is so cute, and great for a nice day/night out. You could say it's a little bridal but I think the messy bun deters from that a bit. I wish I could replicate this at home, but alas, I can only do standard and fishtail braids. French plaits have never been my "thing". I've tried on so many occasions to try and do them, but I fail miserably every time. I'm now considering studying "HOW TO" braid tutorials on YouTube.

For Makeup, now it's Autumn and the nights are drawing in quicker and the leaves are turning brown and crispy, I thought it apt to change up my makeup up a bit (maybe I was feeling a bit daring this day). I treated myself to a new lipstick from the YSL counter, I picked up this dark berry colour in "Rouge Pur Couture 205". For my eyes I used a "By Terry Ombre BlackStar Colour-Fix Cream Eye Shadow in Brown Perfection*" which is a lovely Taupe, Shimmer Brown.  I then blended it out on it's own with my Mac 217 brush & Voila. My new love and eye staple was born. Now I just need the rest of the colours...(Mischievous giggle).

Are you changing up your makeup bag this autumn?

Someday Summary - Friday

♥ Found these photo's of me being a total poser with some geek glasses a while back. when i was waiting for the boy to come round. I quite liked my long fringe, it's sort of making me want it back, and i almost trimmed my fringe today too. Thnk i'll leave it.
♥ Had a proper sing song to Ellie Goulding's album today. Probabaly one of my favourites of 2010. I don't think i will ever get bored of it. Although i would like her to release another one to fullfill my Ellie Goulding needs. Thanks Ellie...if you're reading.
♥ Aside from singing along to Ellie Goulding i have been in such a rubbish mood. Totally uninspired, drained, unmotivated and generally just down in the dumps. Hate days when i feel like this, they drag.
♥ Went and bought ingredients to make a banana & milk and white chocolate cake. I think i'm addicted to it..when it comes out of the oven and it's still warm and the chocolate is all melted (i'm quite literally drooling right now)
♥ I have been having REALLY vivid dreams recently and a very disturbed sleeping pattern. In fact some of my dreams have involved some other beauty bloggers (ooer) haha. I hate vivid dreams, they really freak me out and i wake up wandering if it really happened or not. Although i did find these sleeping facts very interesting...

Hair of the Day

My fringe didn't sit well today...so i parted my hair and curled it :)

I will never have gorgeous Kim Kardashian locks, but i quite liked it.
The first photo was before i left the house, and the second was a few hours later in my mums shop when the curls had dropped a bit.
What do you prefer? Big bouncy curls, or dropped, loose ones?
I think i like both!

D.I.Y Ombre Hair.

Unless you've been living under a rock throughout summer (which seems to have swiftly departed) then you will know that "Ombre" hair has been a very "in" style. In very basic terms, it's a look of which it appears your hair has been sunkissed (depending on the strength of the colour) at the ends of your hair. Or that you're hair has grown out, leaving you with darker roots and lighter tips. It appears that the popular choice of colouring is brown to blonde/caramel, although i have seen people doing ombre with many different colours.

All images taken from Google. How hot does Drew Barrymore look right now?

A few months ago, i became very bored of my current hairstyle. I know a lot of you are always bigging up my long, brunette locks, but when you've had the same style for years, it does become a little mundane. I wanted something different, but i didnt know what. For a while i though of chopping it all off Frankie Sandford style, then i decided i would almost definitely miss my long hair. Then i thought of going all over caramel but i wasnt sure if i would suit it. It was then that i discovered "Ombre". I had saved various different images of celebrities sporting the ombre hairdo, in the hope that maybe, if i was feeling brave enough, i could take along a few photos to the hairdresser (who i was assuming would charge a stupid amount of moolah to essentially put some bleach and tin foil at the ends of my hair) After stumbling upon Lily's Blog LLYMLRS (which is amazing so go follow her) and finding her post on "How to DIY Ombre", i thought "This actually doesn't look all that difficult".

I pondered on the idea for a few weeks, went out and bought the dye & kept it until i felt brave enough. Saturday night, i thought "eck, why not", so i mixed the dye and tried out a strand test to see what the colour would be like after 25 minutes. If it was too blonde, it wouldnt have mattered as it was only one piece of hair. After 25 minutes, the colour wasnt really all that different. So, i knew it had to be on for longer.

L'oreal Perfect Blonde Highlighting Kit - £5.99 & HELLO BOOBIES.

I applied the dye all over the ends of my hair, making sure i really covered it all. I also put some on the ends of the hair that was closer to my face, as i wanted it to blend and feather a little more. I left that, for approximately 30 minutes. As there was a lot more dye, i think it worked a little quicker than the strand test. After this time, I washed and dried my hair, only to decide it wasn't quite as blonde as i'd hoped. It was more a dull gingery strawberry blonde, and i wanted a little more depth. So i then applied a bit more bleach but this time only to the very ends of my hair, i then put tin foil around it. I did this as i was getting ready to go out, and i didnt want bleach flicking everywhere, although i really think it helped the bleaching process along. I left this for another 20 minutes.

And this is the result. I do like it, considering i did it myself, it could have been a lot worse. I'm not planning on keeping it forever, it definitely fullfilled my longing to change my hair & i think it actually looks really nice. I have noticed it has dried out the ends of my hair pretty badly, which were already very dry anyway, unless it's just making it stand out more haha. Over all though, thumbs up for a bit of Ombre hair.

Pretty sure my friend won't be too impressed i used this picture, sorry darling! :)

Want Big Smexy Hair?

I've been asked loads of times how i achieve alot of volume in my hair..

First thing is first though, if you have very fine hair, and not alot of it, it can be alot harder achieving volume in your hair..not impossible..just harder.

Luckily, i have quite fine hair...but LOADS of it, so i can use many different techniques.

Volumising Products Before Blowdrying

Obviously, before you do anything with your hair, after you have washed it, you need to apply some "volumising product" to the root of your hair..
This may be a number of different things, but these are products i tend to use regularly...

Mousse - I dont have a particular type i prefer over another. Mousse is something i tend not to reach for as often as i find it can get a little sticky, but it does do a very good job of lifting hair at the root, and works well in conjunction with rollers.
Tigi Bedhead "Superstar" range - I don't own everything in this range, but i do own the blowdry lotion which achieves fab volume after blowdrying. Although this whole line of products are designed to reach maximum voluminosity (is that a word) haha. See my review of this product HERE
S factor "Body Booster plumping spray" - This is one of my favourites, although the smell is very overpowering and often leaves me feeling sick, this product is simply just spritzed in at the roots on damp hair, and blowdryed. See my review on this product HERE
Clynol "Look At Me - Naughty Styling Fluid" - This is alot like the product before, although i do think this would work alot better on finer hair as the formulation isn't as sticky/strong. Review HERE

Blowdrying Methods

I know that most of you will already know this, but for those that don't i thought i would quickly mention it...

Blowdry your hair upside down.
It really is that simple, it's the quickest most effective way of achieving alot of volume in your hair. It's probabaly bad for the hair shaft as it's in the wrong direction, and could result in hair breakage over time, so would only suggest this if you have prepped the hair well before hand with some sort of heat protectant, and not on occasions, rather than everyday.

You can also use Large round natural bristle brushes, i own one by Tigi S Factor that is huge...but it works great. You simply curl the hair around the brush, pulling the root up and away from the head, and blowdry. I find it quite difficult getting this technique right, i guess im just cack handed. :)

Velcro Rollers

If i have time to prepare myself for a night out, and want ultimate volume, i will use velcro rollers. And i like to use different sizes for different sections of the hair.
It's best to use velcro rollers when the hair is almost dry, so a bit of upside down blowdrying after the volumising serum would be ideal. Then when the hair is still a bit damp, put the rollers in. I have seen some people put rollers in where they turn the hair down and backwards...i don't know how they achieve volume this way...i pull the hair upwards and back, lifting the hair at the root. :) You can then apply a tiny bit of flexible hairspray. I say Flexible because if you use something stronger, it might leave the hair a little crispy. I like to use strong hold hairspray at the root, but not over the hair on the rollers.

[Haha - Sexy!]
Sometimes you may need to use bobbi pins to secure the rollers in place.
You can then blowdry on a low speed, low heat setting until its fully dry, although personally, i find that if you leave it to dry naturally, it has better effect.
I tend to leave my rollers in for around an hour + (so yeh, only do this is if you are planning way ahead, and being super laid back and organised about getting ready haha)

Back-combing

Let me start by saying this is the worst technique for your hair, yet we are all guilty of a little backcombing arent we?
I try not to backcomb too much of the hair, in fact i stick to the crown mainly, unless you want to get more of a Diana Vickers esq style, in which case, you'd just go backcomb crazy.
If you start by sectioning the hair from the middle of your head, then backcomb, and hairspray each section until you reach the crown or top of your head, leaving the hair on the very top, to cover the messy backcombing.
I find a tooth pick comb the easiest way of backcombing but have also heard that a natural bristle brush does a pretty good job too.
I then secure with bobbi pins for a half up do or just hairspray if left down.

Here is my mum, modelling a backcombed half up-do. As you can imagine..its kindof impossible for me to take picture of the back of my head...believe me..i tried.

Then..in the words of JPmetz...
Hairspray THE HELL

Yep, hairspray really does do a good job with volumising. Sometimes when im feeling reallly lazy, i just lift the hair, hairspray at the root and voila.

Some Hairspray favourites...
♥ Tresemme freeze hold
♥ Clynol (review here)
♥ Pantene Ice Shine strong hold
♥ S Factor Chic shine (review here)

I hope this has helped a few of you, i know it might be pretty basic to some, but sometimes i combine all of these methods when doing my hair..bad i know, and you might not...and if you want ultimate BIG hair...then you should too :)

James Brown Scandalous Haircare

As far as shampoo and conditioner goes, I honestly don't like to spend too much money, something that cleans and conditions my hair is all i need. Of course i like to indulge in the more expensive ranges such as TIGI every once in a while but since i don't have coloured hair or mega dry frizzy hair i've never really felt the need to splash out too often. Because of this, i like to try as many lower end brands as possible and places like Boots and Superdrug are always having different promotions on their haircare.

I came across James Brown's Scandalous range around 7 months ago when he was giving some away with a magazine. I picked up the treatment and instantly fell in love with it. I have around three lower end (i say lower end, but i'd say its more middle of the road) shampoos and conditioners i would HIGHLY reccommend and this is definitely one of them.

The Shampoo & Conditioner smell amazing for a start. If any of you are familiar with the Thierry Mugler Angel perfume, it is very similar to that but obviously not as strong. It leaves my hair feeling squeaky clean and removes any build up which may cause greasiness or weigh the hair down. I think this is why it gives it so much volume. For those of you with thin hair, this could be an absolute godsend. I have very heavy, long, thick hair, and for any shampoo to actually LIFT the roots and give it a nice light swishy feeling (get where im coming from?) is almost a miracle. Shampoo also lathers fantastically, so for those who get no satisfaction from no lather or suds, fear not. The Conditioner is also fab, leaves my hair silky soft yet no weighing down and gives my hair a healthy shine.

Above is a picture of my newly washed and blowdryed hair (do excuse no makeup and me standing ever so glamourously in my bra, ehem) I also used some of the James Brown Scandalous Mousse before blowdrying...

Which then brings me nicely onto the mousse. By far the best i've used. If you are wanting to achieve a naturally voluminous barnet, it's just standard that you use a mousse before blowdrying. If you don't, this could well be where you are going wrong. I will always use mousse after washing my hair, it boosts the hair at the root but also just makes styling so much easier. I use a nice full palm of mousse but obviously it varies depending on how much hair you have. If you steer clear of mousse because you feel it leaves your hair sticky, you're applying too much. Mousse should never leave an icky feeling in your hair. It should feel weightless.

The next thing is the treatment, this is amazing if you are feeling like your hair needs a boost of shine and body, and basically a little treat. Just as simple as other treatments, work into the hair concentrating on the ends, and leave on for around 5-10 minutes then rinse. Smells amazing and makes my hair feel SO soft. Love it.

Last but not least, the hairspray. Besides it's amazing scent (as with all the products) this hairspray is designed to make you feel as though you don't actually have any hairspray on your head. I wouldn't say it's good for a rock hard freeze hold but i love it because when i've just freshly washed my hair, sometimes i hate the fact i spray on the hairspray and it instantly looks frizzy and a little "hard". Obviously if you have a certain style in mind, you'd be in need of something like that, but when you just want a natural flexible style to be held in place without it appearing as though you have a head of hairspray this is perfect! Especially for styling your fringe.

Basically i absolutely love James Browns Scandalous Volume range and i will be buying it until the day it dissapears from the shelves. There's currently/was very recently an offer in Superdrug 2 for £6 (I think, don't quote me) so if it's still running i highly reccommend you go and stock up on everything in this range and give it a go. You won't be dissapointed.

OOTD: My New Love for Sequins..

Outfit

Todays outfit is sporting two of my new garments purchased at the weekend in Leeds.
Garment no1 is my sequined top: £9.87 (or something) in Primark. This is my new love.
Garment no2 is my Jeggings (yes, i finally invested in a pair) £20 in Topshop (But Jack used his student discount so they were a bit less. :)

I also wore my cropped black blazer on top for when i was cold.

Hair
This was kindof sixties-ish. I backcombed the crown of my head, and did the middle parting plaits. The rest was left to do at it wished. It looks very very loosely tousled.

Eyes
Too Faced Shadow Insurance Primer
Woodwinked E/S all over lid
Smut E/S in crease and outer v
2True waterproof eyeliner
Loreal Voluminous Mascara

I really like this outfit, what do you think?
Are you into the whole sequin thing?
Thinking of wearing this to the Maybelline event on thursday... :)

When one gets bored, she snips.

I got borded & snipped my fringe, I don't like when it becomes too long and unruly, and it becomes increasingly hard for me to style or actually like how i'd styled it. Don't get me wrong, sometimes i like having a long fringe, and parting my hair in the middle, but i got fed up with it and it was weighing it down, thus making my hair look more flat. So, here is my shorter fringe styled to the side (how i used to wear my hair everyday without fail) Have no fret those of you who think i suit a middle parting more, i can still part it, and actually, it looks better. More Mollie King-esq (Google if unsure) After taking these photos, i also realised i have natural highlights through my fringe. I did have highlights put in (about 7) around a year and a half ago, so they have pretty much gone, but yeh, why have i never noticed those before? I curled the ends of my hair on a low heat using my Cloud Nine straighteners (LOVE - Buy some. Now)

Also, for those who may be interested I am wearing Mac's Studio Fix Fluid on my face, with Bare Escentuals on top & Nars Orgasm blush. Nothing on my lips & Mac's Woodwinked & Bronze on my eyes with Maybelline False Lash effect mascara (very unsure of this mascara, sometimes it works like a dream, other times its too wet and clumpy and the brush is a beast - Thoughts?
